It is about being in love with God and His people. A person can have a leadership role and still not lead like Jesus. A person can have no title at all and still carry the heart of a servant leader.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Paul tells us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Jesus did not cling to status. He humbled Himself. He laid down His rights. He chose obedience. He moved toward people in love.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This is the heart of servant leadership: surrender over self-promotion, humility over pride, service over status.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Jesus led from beneath, not above. He did not need to prove Himself by controlling others. He revealed the Father by serving others.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This challenges our motives. Why do we want to lead? Is it to be seen? To be important? To get our way? Or is it because we love God and want others to flourish?<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">In APEST, every gift can be used with either pride or humility. A servant heart keeps the gift healthy.
